Late Bloomer

Almost two decades ago, I experienced life events and changes I had never anticipated or imagined. I was slightly desperate and mostly deflated, much like the economy at that time. I needed work, a job, an occupation, an income. My skill set wasn't necessarily up-to-date considering I had just spent the bulk of my young adult years raising small children, primarily working from home or with them right by my side. Prior to growing my family, my admin career began several years even before Windows or Apple emerged. But during the fleeting time of childrearing, technology sped ahead as I sat playing Oregon Trail with my five and eight year olds. I will never regret taking the time to teach each of my children to read, ride a bike, or how to brush their teeth and cut their own food. But those years passed by rapidly, as did the ever changing world outside our cozy home.

So back to the need for a J.O.B. My ever-loving partner "D" noticed a seasonal hiring sign at a small garden center not far from our home. I adamantly resisted said suggestion. What was he thinking? How could I possibly get hired with no experience, especially when the job market was imploding? Thankfully, D persisted, so I called for an interview, was hired, and once again my life changed in a way I never expected.

I will readily admit, patience is not my best virtue. But, I'm an eager learner and worked diligently and attentively to learn about this new field of fertilizer and flowers in which I found myself. One day, as my new manager picked up on my frustration and lack of knowledge, he smiled and politely commented to me, "It takes years to learn garden." Slightly encouraged, I struggled to understand fertilizer types and flower names while making bows and wrapping orders. I learned the difference between an annual and a perennial, and giggled a bit when a customer asked me for chicken manure and worm castings.

Fast forward to this point in time as I enter another stage of growth and development. It's now time for the bloom!
